New Phase of Daniel Aros-Aguilar's project is complete

February 23, 2023

Daniel Aros-Aguilar has provided the chapter with an update on his project and how the APA | DC LGBTQIAP+ Photography Grant has supported this phase of his series.

Sandunga Nunca Muere

This past November, I returned to Oaxaca with the help of the diversity grant made possible by the APA DC chapter. I am so excited to share the portraits and images from this phase of the series, “Sandunga Nunca Muere.”

I visited Juchitan de Zaragoza during the annual vela or celebration of the “Las Autenticas Intrepidas Buscadoras del Peligro.” This is the community advocacy and initiative group founded by the Muxe community more than 47 years ago. During this trip, I created everlasting friendships with many resilient women and third-gender people who continue fighting racism and femicide by living their most authentic and best lives. Much progress has been made in politics, where people like my friend Carisia or the new reigning queen Melissa have impacted the sociopolitical climate of the community.

Muxes do not live in a paradise, as portrayed by most media. Their relationships and authenticity are at risk against acts of hate from machismo-fueled femicide, including acts of violence within the queer community. These portraits celebrate their Zapotec roots and intrepid authenticity.
