Digital Filmmaking with DSLRs

Date: September 13 – 17
Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Where: Center for Digital Imaging Arts, Boston University, Georgetown Campus
Instructor: Barry Gribble

CDIA logo

This is a week-long course for photographers looking to expand into using Digital SLRs like the Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 7D for filmmaking. We’ll cover all the basics of shooting a scene, and then the workflow for bringing video footage from the DLSR into Final Cut Pro for editing. We will go over the difference between using hot lights and strobes, and using moving camera techniques. We’ll shoot a scene with professional actors and learn how to work with them to get great performances for fiction or non-fiction. Finally, we’ll cover all aspects of audio recording for video.

Barry Gribble is an award-winning filmmaker, instructor and founder of Integral Arts Productions.  His recent spec Pilot, “Dog” was shot in two days for under $100 and went on to win “Best Overall Television Show” at the Independent Television Festival and “Best Drama” at the New York Television Festival.  Previously, He co-wrote and directed a pilot presentation for FOX Television Studios, which they are still shopping.  His previous spec pilot, “Codeword Secret” won him a mentorship with Phil Rosenthal, creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond.”  He was a writer/producer on the Animal Planet show, “The A-List,” on of their few forays in to comedy.  His team has won numerous awards in various 48 Hour Film Project competitions over the years.  Additionally, Barry teaches digital filmmaking through his own classes and with various other organizations.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of all aspects of photography and having a solid working knowledge of the photography business.  We will not spend any time on things like basic composition and elements of photography that a working professional should be familiar with.  The reason is to provide the ability to dive into this topic as quick and as deep as possible.  You do not have to have experience in Final Cut Pro or working with video on a DSLR as they will be the main focus of the workshop. All CDIA graduates meet the requirements.
