Happy Holidays from The Diversity Committee

Happy Holidays, all you gorgeous APAers!

As we reflect on what makes us most successful as an organization, we notice that a community built on trust and camaraderie is one of our most impactful assets. Our chapters work hard to provide a year-round community for learning, for growth, for celebrating, and commiserating.  There is nothing better than having national access to folks who understand the highs and lows of our journey.

So, in service to our highest goals, we want to encourage each member to show up this holiday season with a heart of community and intention. APA is built with safety and inclusion in mind to promote growth and learning within our community, and we trust you are aligned with that mission.

Here are some ways to have safer events:

Connect Deeper: It’s always great to connect with new people. Grab their socials to learn about them before making future commitments.

Clear Communication is the best communication: When talking with someone it's best to make sure you have a clear understanding of all things involved. Need better understanding? Ask for clarification or get a second opinion from someone you trust.

See something, say something. If you notice something that seems urgent or needs attention, check with the person to see if they need any support. Need additional help? Check with your chapter representatives. Your chapter chairs and board members are always available to facilitate.

Drink responsibly. We want everyone to have a great time at our events but be aware of your limits. We always suggest everyone drink responsibly and don't drink and drive.

Continue the connection, safely.  If you decide to leave our events and continue to connect in other venues/ways, be sure to be diligent in protecting yourself. Be sure to have all details about who you are connecting with and where you are going. Take the extra step to alert others of your whereabouts if there are any concerns before leaving or take a friend/colleague with you.

To ensure your safety, it’s important to trust your intuition. If a situation seems uneasy or doesn’t feel right, pay attention to your gut feelings–lean in and listen to yourself. Trust your instincts.

As a reminder, we encourage all members to not be in violation of any actions that violate APA’s safe place mission.

Have a wonderful Winter season!
